課程概述

1For the understanding of Southeast Asian cultures and peoples, this course will explain the general historical change from the 19th century to the 1990’s by focusing on cultural change. In this area, what is formed is not a gathering of each history of present nations, but total perspectives based on several important historical waves in ascending order;
1. The New Change Period (the 1970’s & 80’s)
2. The Cold War (the 1960’s)
3. The Decolonization (the 1940’s & 50’s)
4. The Birth of Nationalism (first half of the 20th C.)
5. The Imperialism (19th C.)
6. The Early Colonization (the period of mercantilism: before 18th C.)
Generally Southeast Asian history in the modern times was recorded by documents written in several languages. For easier understanding, this course will focus on material cultural elements or pictorial data in each period.

課程目標
Total understanding of Southeast Asian history and culture in the modern times. Therefore, the target of this course is not meant to be a memorization of detailed name/time, but a creation of soft thinking for understanding of cultural changes in this complicated wide area.
